ANI – Automatic Number Identification

The billing number of the line or trunk that originated a call. ANI was used with older MF signaling (versus ISUP signaling, which is more commonly used today) to support exchange access and billing. The ANI may or may not be the same as the Calling Party Number. Nonetheless, it is sometimes used (albeit, incorrectly) to refer to the Calling Party Number or Caller ID.

ANI is defined in ANSI T1.104.
